Memorial Day Activities Around Arlington and Northern Virginia

Memorial Day gives us a moment to remember those who gave their lives serving this country across all branches of the armed forces. Men and women from every corner of America, including right here in Arlington and Northern Virginia, deserve to be recognized for their sacrifice and for paving the way for those who serve today. And living this close to the nation's capital, we have no shortage of ways to come together and honor them. From big parades to local festivals, here are some of the best ways to spend the weekend and pay tribute to those who gave everything so that we could live free.

National Memorial Day Observance at Arlington National Cemetery

Arlington National Cemetery is marking its 158th Memorial Day Observance with its annual ceremony honoring those who died while serving the armed forces. The event takes place at 12:00 PM on May 25, in the Memorial Amphitheater, with performances by the United States Marine Band and the United States Navy Band Sea Chanters.

If you have never attended, this one is worth putting on the calendar.

Military Women's Memorial

For a more intimate and genuinely moving experience, the Military Women's Memorial hosts its 29th Annual Memorial Program just steps from the Cemetery's entrance. Women from all branches of the armed forces share their stories, pay tribute to those who came before them, and recognize the trailblazers who opened the door for every woman who serves today.

The program begins at 3:00 PM on May 25th. Tickets are free.

National Memorial Day Parade in Washington, D.C.

If you have been in Northern Virginia for a while, you already know about this one. If you just moved to the area, here is your introduction: the National Memorial Day Parade is the largest of its kind in the country.

More than 5,000 participants representing all 50 states march down Constitution Avenue to commemorate the holiday. The parade steps off at 10:00 AM.

Falls Church Memorial Day Festival and Parade

The D.C. parade is not for everyone, and that is perfectly fine. For a more neighborhood feel, the Falls Church Memorial Day Festival and Parade delivers a full day of community celebration on May 25, from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM, with the parade itself kicking off at 2:00 PM.

It is free, family-friendly, and a great reason for anyone across NoVa to get out of the house.

Memorial Day Weekend Rooftop Beach Bash at Clarendon Ballroom

Once you have made your rounds at a ceremony or parade, head over to the Clarendon Ballroom for their Rooftop Beach Bash. Craft cocktails, warm weather, and a rooftop crowd, it is a solid way to enjoy the weekend. Tickets are available online and the party starts at 3:00 PM on May 23.

This area knows how to honor the holiday and still have a good time doing it. Whether you are planting yourself along Constitution Avenue or grabbing a drink above Clarendon, there is something here for everyone. Also check out some beautiful neighborhoods nearby.

We wanted to take a moment to recognize the men and women serving in our armed forces. In remembrance of those who came before us by serving our country and their families, we thank you.
