Arlington,
Summer in Northern Virginia is one of the best reasons to live here, right up until the heat index climbs into the 100s. Northern Virginia summers can be brutal, but a hot forecast does not mean you are stuck inside with the blinds drawn, it just means being a little smarter about when and how you get outside.
Arlington County opens cooling centers at libraries and community centers on the hottest days. With that in mind, here are four of our favorite ways to enjoy an Arlington summer, rain, shine, or full sun.
When the heat index is not messing around, Long Bridge Park Aquatics & Fitness Center is the move. The 92,000-square-foot facility sits on the Potomac in National Landing and gives Arlington its only 50-meter competition pool, plus a family leisure pool with a lazy river, water slide, and sprayground. Everything is indoors and climate-controlled, so no matter how hot it gets outside, the water and air stay comfortable.
Daily admission runs about $12 for Arlington County residents and a bit more for non-residents, with family and annual pass options available. Parking is free, and it pairs easily with lunch afterward in nearby Crystal City. Pool hours shift throughout the week for lap swim and open recreation, so check the schedule before you head over.
Location: 333 Long Bridge Dr, Arlington, VA 22202
For a cool, shaded afternoon that still feels like an outing, the Torpedo Factory Art Center in Old Town Alexandria is hard to beat. Free and open since 1974, it houses the nation's largest collection of working artists' open studios under one roof, with more than 70 artists creating and selling everything from paintings and ceramics to jewelry and stained glass. Wander the air-conditioned halls, watch artists at work, and pop into the Target Gallery for a rotating exhibition.
It sits right on the Alexandria waterfront, so the best summer plan is simple: go inside during the hottest part of the day, then stroll the water once the sun dips. Open daily from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM, closed only on major holidays.
Location: 105 N Union St, Alexandria, VA 22314
For families who want the outdoors without the full blast of summer sun, Theodore Roosevelt Island is one of the best-kept secrets this close to Rosslyn. The 88.5-acre wooded island sits in the Potomac and offers shaded trails through forest, marsh, and wetlands, cooler under the tree canopy than almost anywhere nearby. At the center, a memorial plaza honors Roosevelt with a bronze statue and granite tablets inscribed with his words on nature and conservation.
Admission is free, and the island is open daily from 6:00 AM to 10:00 PM. Our advice for summer: go early. Morning light, cooler temperatures, and quieter trails make for a better visit, and you will beat both the heat and the crowds. Parking is limited and only accessible from the northbound lanes of the George Washington Memorial Parkway.
Location: George Washington Memorial Parkway northbound, Arlington, VA 22209
For families looking to beat the heat without leaving the fun behind, Founders Row's Market Square splash pad is the easiest win in Falls Church all summer, kids, and dogs, can cool off right in the middle of the action while you grab an iced coffee from Semicolon Café under the shaded seating nearby. Once the sun starts to drop, Founders Groove takes over every Thursday night from June through August with free live music, food, and folding-chair energy, and if the day gets away from you, the air-conditioned Paragon Theaters is always a solid backup plan. Visit their website for their calendar and fun events coming up.
Location: 110 Founders Avenue, Falls Church, VA 22046
What a Good Northern Virginia Summer Says About This Community
An indoor lazy river built for the hottest days, a free art center where you can watch working artists any afternoon, a shaded island escape minutes from Rosslyn, all within a short drive of nearly any Arlington zip code, is not a coincidence. Neighborhoods with this kind of variety, indoor and outdoor, free and splurge-worthy, are the ones people put down roots in. And a community people want to stay in is exactly the kind that holds its value, summer after summer.
If you are already here, you know the drill: hydrate, plan around the sun, and get out and enjoy it. If you are thinking about making Arlington home, there is no better time to see what summer here actually feels like. We live here too, and we would love to help you find your place in it. Whether you are searching for your first home near Long Bridge Park, upsizing closer to Chain Bridge Forest, or just starting to explore Northern Virginia, reach out to the Varity Homes team and let's talk about finding your place in Arlington.
