One of the most cherished fall activities is hand-picking apples and pumpkins from local farms. This isn't merely a delightful activity for families and friends; it's a way to support our local farmers and ensure you're sourcing the freshest produce. When you pick your own fruits and vegetables, you're also creating lasting memories with loved ones and teaching the younger generation about the importance of sustainable farming.

They also have apple cider doughnuts, pies, jams, and other treats made from their own apples. They are open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and are located at 2599 Chain Bridge Rd, Vienna, VA, 22181.
Immanuel Church-on-the-Hill: This is a church in Alexandria, VA that hosts an annual pumpkin patch as a fundraiser for more than 25 charities. They have pumpkins of all sizes, gourds, and baked goods. They are open weekdays from noon to 6 p.m. and weekends from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. until October 31. Nalls Produce: This is a farm and market in Alexandria, VA. They offer local fruits, vegetables, honey, eggs, and more. You can pick your own pumpkins from their patch. They also have a play yard for kids, which is set to open on September 30. The play area includes crawling tubes, lots of hay, and great spaces for photo-ops. They are open Monday to Saturday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and are located at 7310 Beulah St, Alexandria
Cox Farms: This is the largest and most popular seasonal event destination in the Washington DC area. They have a variety of activities and attractions for all ages, such as slides, rope swings, animals, hayrides, corn mazes, and more. You can enjoy their Fall Festival during the day or their Fields of Fear at night from September to November. They also have other events and offerings throughout the year, such as Smokin’ Saturdays, Foamhenge, Corner Market, and Christmas Trees. They are open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. (or until 11 p.m. on Fields of Fear nights) and are located at 15621 Braddock Rd, Centreville, VA
Picking Tips: The art of picking requires a keen eye. For apples, firmness and a shiny skin are indicators of freshness. Pumpkins, on the other hand, should be deep orange with a sturdy stem.
Storing Tips: Proper storage ensures longevity. Apples thrive in cool, dark places, while pumpkins prefer cool, dry spots. For longer storage, freezing is a viable option.
Recipe Ideas: Apples and pumpkins can be used in many delicious dishes, such as pies, soups, salads, breads, muffins, cakes, and more. You can also make your own apple cider or pumpkin spice latte at home with some simple ingredients. Here are some of my favorite recipes for apple pies, pumpkin soups, and other dishes that use these fruits.
